Actual and potential heterotrophicneutrogen fixation and detrification rates of oryza glumaepatula Steud in an amazonian lake BJB
ENRICH-PRAST,A.; ESTEVES,F. A.; BIESBOER,D. D..
Estimates of the rates of heterotrophic nitrogen fixation (HNF) and denitrification by acetylene reduction and acetylene inhibition, respectively, were determined for the roots and culms of wild rice, Oryza glumaepatula, in Lake Batata, a lake severely impacted by the dumping of bauxite tailings into the lake basin. Two stations were established in different parts of the lake: one in a natural area and other in an impacted area of the lake. Plant assays were performed during the principle hydroperiods of dry (December) and flood (July) to determine both: a) Actual rates of HNF and denitrification, and b) potential rates of HNF after amending with glucose potential rates of denitrification after amending with glucose, glucose + nitrate, or nitrate alone....

Effects of cutting disturbance in Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) Soják on the benthic macroinvertebrates - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i1.6383 Biological Sciences
Silveira, Thiago Cesar Lima; UFRGS; Rodrigues, Gilberto Gonçalves; UFBA; Souza, Gabriela Peixoto Coelho de; UFRGS; Würdig, Norma Luiza; UFRGS.
Lagoons are considered protected areas because these systems play a key ecological role. However, the extraction of macrophyte Schoenoplectus californicus is held for manufacture of handcrafts, being an alternative income for riverbank communities. This study evaluated the impact of S. californicus experimental cutting on benthic macroinvertebrates trough a field experiment. Macroinvertebrates were sampled at 1, 12, 26 and 60 days after the macrophyte cutting in demarked plots (1 m²), as well at control plots. The families number was not statistically different (ANOVA, p > 0.05), but the total density of invertebrates, and the density of Ceratopogonidae were significant (ANOVA, p < 0.05) for interaction between sampling date and treatment. A...

Eichhornia azurea decomposition and the bacterial dynamic: an experimental research BJM
Dahroug,Zaryf; Santana,Natália Fernanda; Pagioro,Thomaz Aurélio.
Abstract Organic decomposition is a complex interaction between chemical, physical and biological processes, where the variety of aquatic vascular plants is essential for the trophic dynamics of freshwater ecosystems. The goal of this study was to determine the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth decomposition rate, the time relation with the limnological parameters, and whether this relationship is a result of decomposition processes. To that end, we collected water and leaves of E. azurea in Surf Leopoldo, PR. The experiment consisted of two treatments: 25 containers with 450 mL of water and 0.8 g of biomass dry weight were used with or without the addition of macrophytes. Samples were collected in triplicate at times 0, 3 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24...

Fruit and seed biometry and germination of Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby (Nymphaeaceae) from the Pantanal floodplain Biological Sciences
Tozin, Luiz Ricardo dos Santos; Corrêa-Da-Costa, Liana Baptista De Lima; Scremin-Dias, Edna.
Numerous plant species are easily established in the wide flood plains of the Pantanal wetlands due to the environmental heterogeneity. The aquatic macrophytes excel in permanently flooded areas, particularly Nymphaeaceae species. Victoria amazonica, popularly known as the vitória-régia, is hallmarked for its beauty. However, the biology and conditions necessary for the seed germination of this flowering plant remain unknown. In the present study, the fruit and seed morphology and biometry were described and the seed germination was evaluated under different abiotic conditions. To this end, mature fruits of V. amazonica were collected from the bays near Paraguay River in the south Pantanal floodplain. The fruits and seeds were described and measured using...

Impacto do sedimento sobre o desenvolvimento do perifíton no Rio Taquari, Pantanal, MS. Infoteca-e

Morphoanatomical injuries in Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) as a result of exposure to clomazone in water Anais da ABC (AABC)
RIBEIRO,VICTOR HUGO VIDAL; COUTINHO,ÍTALO ANTÔNIO COTTA; ALENCAR,BRENDA THAIS BARBALHO; CABRAL,CÁSSIA MICHELLE; SANTOS,JOSÉ BARBOSA DOS; FERREIRA,EVANDER ALVES; FRANCINO,DAYANA MARIA TEODORO.
Abstract Contamination of water sources due to herbicide is of great concern. Clomazone is a pesticide with a high contamination potential which could possibility lixiviate to water streams. Changes caused by residual herbicide include flora modifications which are generally detrimental for some species. The lack of morphological studies performed in aquatic plants exposed to herbicide-contaminated environments has encouraged the development of our research. For the first time, we present a study that aimed to evaluate leaf injuries visible to the naked eye as well as microscopical effects which may be caused by clomazone on Pistia stratiotes. Pistia stratiotes was subjected to five concentrations of clomazone. Our analysis showed leaf injuries,...

Photosynthetic rate of the aquatic macrophyte Egeria densa Planch. (Hydrocharitaceae) in two rivers from the Itanhaém River Basin in São Paulo State, Brazil BABT
Pezzato,Maura Maria; Camargo,Antonio Fernando Monteiro.
Egeria densa is a submerged aquatic macrophyte which, in Brazil, causes problems specially for electric energy generation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the photosynthetic rate of E. densa in two rivers (Aguapeú and Mambu) with different limnological features, both located in the Itanhaém River Basin. This species is abundant in both rivers without causing damages to their multiple uses. Photosynthetic rates were analysed in February, May, August and November 1998 and limnological variables of the water and sediment were also measured. The highest value of gross photosynthesis (GP) was detected in May (10.06 in Aguapeú and 6.10 mgO2/gDW/h in Mambu), when under-water photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) was also high (1,126.7 and 895.8 m...

Population dynamics and net primary production of the aquatic macrophite Nymphaea rudgeana C. F. Mey in a lotic environment of the Itanhaém River basin (SP, Brazil) BJB
CAMARGO,A. F. M.; FLORENTINO,E. R..
In this paper we evaluated the population dynamics and obtained estimates of the net primary production of the aquatic macrophyte Nymphaea rudgeana in an arm of the Itanhaém River (São Paulo State, Brazil). This species presents, in the studied area, a broad seasonal variation of biomass. As from November (13.1 g DW/m²) we observed a gradual increase of biomass that reached a maximum in February (163.1 g DW/m²). Then, the biomass decreased, maintaining low levels until a new growth period. The reduction of biomass is associated to the development of floating aquatic macrophytes (Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia molesta) and, subsequently to environmental factors (higher salinity values) that are unfavorable to their development. The net primary production of...

Reproductive phenology and germination of Eleocharis laeviglumis R. Trevis. & Boldrini (Cyperaceae) Acta Botanica
Demeda,Camila Luisa Bernhardt; Seger,Guilherme Dubal dos Santos; Steiner,Neusa; Trevisan,Rafael.
ABSTRACT Aquatic macrophytes are important components of freshwater ecosystems, of which Cyperaceae is the most diverse family. Many species of Cyperaceae form dense populations along lake margins of the southern coast of Brazil, but little is known about their sexual reproductive strategies. We characterized the reproductive life cycle of Eleocharis laeviglumis, an abundant emergent macrophyte of coastal wetlands in southern Brazil, by assessing its reproductive phenophases and estimating the number of its flowers and potentially viable fruits per inflorescence in a natural population. We also tested seed germinability and vigor for a period of four months during a single reproductive season. The species possesses dichogamous and protogynous spikelets...

Temporal variations in the primary productivity of Eleocharis acutangula (Cyperaceae) in a tropical wetland environment Rev. Bras. Bot.
Chagas,Gustavo Gomes; Freesz,Giselli Martins de Almeida; Suzuk,Marina Satika.
Wetland vegetation typically includes aquatic macrophytes with high primary production capacities. The present study investigated how hydrological variations affect biomass allocation and primary productivity in the emergent macrophyte Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult. Eleocharis acutangula ramets were collected from the Campelo Lagoon flood plain (21°39'S, 41°12'W and 21°37S, 41°11'W) between March/2005 and February/2006. This region experienced an unusually short rainy period between November/2005 and February/2006 that generated atypically high primary production levels (128gDWm-2month-1) and total biomass gains (447gDWm-2) in May and June/2005 respectively. Our data indicated that primary production and biomass allocation were strongly influenced...
